僕は町へ続く道を歩いている。
向こうから若い女性がやってくる。
最初、元同級生かと思った。
近づいてからよく見ると、元同僚なのであった。
「あら、どこへ行くの？」
「町まで」
「じゃ、一緒に行く」
並んで腕を組み、町へ続く道を歩き始める。
「最初、同級生かと思ったよ」
「あはっ、なに言ってんの」
彼女は嬉しそうに笑ったが、そのうち
共通の知人のうわさ話を始める。
娘が生まれたという、そのうわさの男の家は
その前の道路の上までせり出して増築中だった。
そのため道路を歩いて渡れない。
顔を見合わせ、互いに困った表情をしてから
しかたなく僕たちは空中に浮かんで越えてゆく。
「なんで今さら増築するんだろうね」
「さあね、どうしてかしら」
その理由を彼女は知っているようなのだが
ここでは知らないふりをすることに決めたらしい。
さりげなく地面に着地したが、さらに道は続く。
まだ町並みは見えてこない。
現在、彼女には恋人がいるそうで、どうやら
その彼氏について言いにくい悩みがあるらしい。
僕は内心、かなり動揺する。
それでも平気な素振りを装いつつ
彼女が続きを話してくれるのを待っている。
この道がどこへ続こうと、もうどうでもいい。

The Road to the Town
I'm walking down the road to the town.
A young woman comes over from the other side.
At first, I thought she was a former classmate.
When I approached her and looked closely,
she was a former colleague.
"Oh, where are you going?"
"To the town."
"Then, let's go together."
We cross our arms side by side
and start walking down the road to the town.
"At first I thought you were a classmate."
"Ah, what are you talking about?"
She laughed happily, but soon began
to gossip about a common acquaintance.
The rumored man's house,
where his daughter was born, was being extended
to the top of the road in front of it.
So we can't walk across the road.
After looking at each other
and making troubled expressions on each other,
we have no choice but to float
in the air and cross over.
"Why is he going to add more now?"
"Well, why?"
She seems to know the reason,
but she decided to pretend
she didn't know it here.
We landed casually on the ground,
but the road continues.
I can't see the streets yet.
She seems to have a lover now, and she seems
to have a hard time talking about him.
I'm pretty upset in my heart.
Still, I'm pretending to be calm
and waiting for her to continue.
No matter where this road goes,
I don't care anymore.
