物音がしたような気がした。
どなたかいらっしゃったか、と玄関へ行く。
すると、玄関の狭いコンクリートの床に誰か寝ている。
いや、まるで寝ているように老母が倒れていた。
とうとう、その時が来たか。
ただし、出血しているような様子はない。
私は頭を片手ですくうように抱きかかえ
そのまま持ち上げる。
それから家の中へ運ぼうとする。
病院へ連絡しなければならない。
そう思うのだが、どこにも電話機は見当たらない。
抱えたまま歩いて病院まで運ばなければならないのか。
玄関から外に出ようとするが、足がすくむ。
町の病院は天竺よりも遠いところにあるような気がする。
