初老の白人女性が家庭教師として
ある屋敷の令嬢に油絵の描き方を教えている。
やがて、はたと彼女は困る。
「この汚れ、どうすれば落ちるのかしら」
執事である私はこっそり教えてやる。
「パレットナイフで絵の具を削りましょう」
「では、やってください」みたいな展開になって
私は汚れたパレットナイフを手につかむ。
絵の汚れを落とす前に、まずナイフの汚れを落とさねば。
それで、ぬぐう新聞紙を探す。
教室に使っている部屋の床に落ちていた。
今日の新聞だが、仕方なかろう。
一枚抜いて、パレットナイフをぬぐう。
絵の具が山盛りについているので
ぬぐってもぬぐってもなかなか落ちない。
もう一枚、新聞紙を抜き取る。
それでも足りない。
もう一枚、と手を伸ばしたところで
家庭教師の彼女から注意を受ける。
「黙っていましたが、今日の新聞ですから
できるだけ使わないようにしてください」
それで、広告だらけの紙面を半分ほど手で切る。
しかし、これでは足りない。
さて、どうしたものか。

Palette Knife and Newspaper
An elderly Caucasian woman, as her tutor,
teaches a mansion daughter
how to paint oil paintings.
Eventually, she is in trouble.
"How can I get rid of this dirt?"
The butler of the mansion, I secretly teach her.
"Shave the paint with a palette knife."
With a development like "Well, please do it,"
I grab a dirty palette knife in my hand.
Before I can clean the picture,
I must first clean the knife.
So I look for a wipe newspaper.
It had fallen on the floor of the room
I was using in the classroom.
Today's newspaper, but it can't be helped.
I pull out one and wipe the palette knife with it.
It has a heap of paint on it,
so it doesn't come off easily even if I wipe it.
Another sheet, I pull out the newspaper.
Still not enough.
Another one, when I reached out for her,
received attention from her.
"I was silent, but it's today's newspaper,
so try not to use it as much as possible."
So I cut half of the ad-filled paper by hand.
However, this is not enough.
What's wrong?
