変な外人の家にお邪魔した記憶がある。
自転車に乗った帰り道の途中、ある店に寄った。
ありふれた住宅の前で古本屋をやっている。
なにやら家の中から老人の話し声が聞こえる。
変な外人が流暢に説明してくれた。
「あれは、ここの爺さんが近所の人たちに
無声映画の弁士をやってあげているのだよ」
どうも納得できかねる話だ。
ともかく、いろいろ手広くやっているらしい。
店の前は雑然としていて、古本だけでなく
オモチャなど雑貨類が無造作に置かれてある。
あまり期待せずに
編み棒になった着せ替え人形を見つけた。
ちょっと欲しくなったが、ためらっていると
変な外人がそれを手に取る。
「よし。これを娘に買ってやろう」
なんとなく女の子の面影が浮かぶ。
「娘さん、そんなの欲しがる年齢だったっけ？」
「うん。まだ子どもなんだよ」
むしろ私が買ってプレゼントしてやって
娘さんに感謝されるのも悪くない、などと思う。

A Weird Foreigner
I remember visiting a weird foreigner's house.
On my way home from my bicycle, I stopped by a store.
A second-hand bookstore in front of a common house.
Somehow I can hear the old man talking
from inside the house.
The weird foreigner explained fluently.
"That's the old man here giving his neighbors
a silent movie narrator."
It's a story I can't understand.
Anyway, he seems to be doing a lot of things.
The front of the store is cluttered,
and not only used books but also miscellaneous goods
such as toys are randomly placed.
When I was looking for something
without much expectation,
I found a dress-up doll that became a knitting stick.
I wanted it a bit, but when I hesitated,
the weird foreigner picked it up.
"OK. I'll buy this for my daughter."
Somehow the image of a girl comes to mind.
"Is your daughter old enough to want that?"
"Yeah. She's still a child."
Rather, I think it's okay for me to buy it,
give it to his daughter, and thank her.
