会ったこともない女性からメールがあった。
かつて勤めていた会社の近くの店でパーティするから
できれば来てもらえると嬉しいな、とのこと。
「よくわからない外国の歌を独唱しなさいとママに言われて
困るくらい大変なんだけど頑張るわ」みたいなコメント。
それが本当とすれば、行かないわけにはいかない。
期日は明日の夜。あまりにも急な話である。
いやいや、しかし待ちなさい。
どう考えてもおかしい。
彼女があの店を知っているはずはない。
そもそも彼女、はるか遠いところに住んでいるのだから
これは絶対に起こり得る話ではない、と断言できる。
けれども、久しぶりにあの店へ行ってみたらどうだろう。
なにか起こるような気がしないこともない。
ただし、常連だったのはずいぶん昔の話だ。
あの店がもう消えていても、ちっとも不思議ではない。

Invitation to the Party
I received an email from a woman I had never met.
She will have a party at a shop near the company
she used to work for, so I hope you'll come.
Her comment, such as "I'm having a hard time
when the female shopkeeper tells me to sing
a foreign song I don't understand,
