筆記でも口述でもなく、実技試験。
故障したエレベーターを修理せよ、とのこと。
参加した受験生たちは戸惑っている。
おれは気づく。
エレベーターの両サイドに隙間がないことに。
なぜかエレベーターを囲む床板は軽く動く。
おれは両サイドに隙間を設けてみた。
すると、エレベーターは正常に動き出した。
試験官が感心して褒めてくれた。
「ついでに、飲み込みの悪い私の喉も治してくれ」
Elevator Test
For some reason, I am taking
an entrance examination for a department store.
Practical exam, not written or dictated.
The examiner told us to repair the broken elevator.
The students who participated are confused.
I notice that
there are no gaps on either side of the elevator.
For some reason, the floorboards
that surround the elevator move lightly.
I tried to make a gap on both sides.
Then, the elevator started to move normally.
The examiner was impressed and praised.
