君は南方の隣町から帰る途中、
天国まで届きそうな長い橋を渡っている。
水彩絵の具をぶちまけたような夕焼けが
君の左手、西方の空に展開されている。
君の視界は横長の絵葉書。
君の意識は
夕日の中心から橋の欄干へ垂線を下し、
川岸との交点から始まる無数の線分を引く。
それら線分は川面に乱反射して
音を立ててキラキラ輝く。
川下にあるはずの海を
高架道路が邪魔しているため
むしろ川上こそ海に近そうな印象を与える。
車道にはバスやトラック、
歩道には女学生と警察官の姿。
自転車が君を追い越してゆくかもしれない。
君の影法師は蛭のように伸びて
橋の横幅より長くなり、
やがて絵葉書の端から
はみ出してしまうだろう。
見えるか見えないか
僕にはわからないけど
こんなふうな絵のない絵葉書を
今、君に送ろう。

Picture Postcard without Picture
You are crossing a long bridge
that is likely to reach heaven
on your way home
from the southern neighboring town.
A sunset that seems to be splashed
with watercolors is unfolding on your left hand,
the western sky.
Your field of vision is a landscape postcard.
Your consciousness is perpendicular
to the bridge's balustrade
from the center of the setting sun,
drawing an infinite number
of line segments starting
from the intersection with the riverbank.
Those line segments are diffusely reflected
on the river surface to make a sound and shine.
Because the elevated road interferes
with the sea that should be downstream,
the upper stream rather gives
an impression closer to the sea.
Buses and trucks on the driveway,
female students and police officers
on the sidewalk.
A bicycle may overtake you.
Your shadowist will grow like a cocoon
and be longer than the width of the bridge,
and will eventually come out
of the end of the postcard.
