布団に入ったものの眠れずにウトウトしていたら
真夜中、地響きとともに妙な音が聞こえてきた。
住んでるマンションの前は急な坂道なのだが
そこを何か非常に重いものが通過している気配。
大型トラックが通る音とはとても思えない。
たとえようのない変な音だった。
無理にたとえるなら、巨大なゾウのような物体が
横倒しになりながらゴロンゴロン転がる感じか。
やがて音は消え、地響きもしなくなった。
翌朝は休日、集団清掃の日だったので
出席された住人たちに尋ねてみた。
しかし、その時刻に起きていた人はおらず
誰も気づかなかったとのこと。
「いえいえ、私はしっかり見ましたよ。
マンモスが群れをなして転がり落ちてゆくのを」
そんな冗談を言ってくれる奇特な住人はいないのだった。

Mammoth Slope
Even though I entered the futon,
I was sleepy and couldn't sleep,
and at midnight I heard a strange sound
with the sound of the earth.
There is a steep slope in front of my apartment,
but I feel that
something very heavy is passing through it.
It's hard to imagine the sound
of a large truck passing through.
It was a strange sound like no other.
If I couldn't force it,
it would be like a giant elephant-like object
rolling sideways while making noise.
Eventually, the sound disappeared,
and there was no sound of the earth.
The next morning was a holiday
and a group cleaning day,
so I asked the residents who attended.
However, nobody was awake at that time,
and no one noticed.
"Yes, I looked closely.
I saw the mammoths rolling in a swarm."
There was no strange resident
who would make such a joke.
