ひとり会社を出て、どこかで昼飯をとるつもり。
おや、幼なじみの女性が通りの向こうからやってくる。
大人になった彼女はとても魅力的に見える。
視線が合いそうだが、どうも自然に話せそうもない。
彼女はおれのすぐ後方を歩いていた知人に話しかける。
「エッソへ行くつもり。あそこのトペテ、おいしいのよ」
それを耳にして、おれは方向転換する。
その時、おれは独り言のように何かつぶやく。
すぐ後方を歩いていた女性が、それを聞いて笑う。
好きでも何でもない女性なので気楽に話しかけられる。
「君もエッソへ行くの？」
彼女は微笑む。
「そうよ。エッソは駅ビルの中にあるの。
あの駅ビルはホーミの店主が建てたものなのよ。
だから私、なかなか彼は偉いと思うわ」
駅ビルが見えてきた。
「この３階部分を増築したのが店主の息子さん。
そろそろ電車が発車する時刻だから、このへんで」
彼女は走り出した。
なんだか、おれも遅れてはならんような気になる。
彼女を追うように走り出し、駅ビルの階段を上る。
今まさに発車せんばかりの電車に飛び乗る。
ホッとする。
だが、チラリと見えた行先表示の地名に見覚えがない。
どうやら逆方向の電車に乗ってしまった気配。
もう昼飯どころではない。
