夜の車道を渡ろうとしている。
左右から来そうなクルマは、しかし来ない。
渡る向こう側のビルの一階に店がある。
店番の老人が今、帰宅するところ。
「ああ、今帰るところだな」と思う。
「もう誰もいないよね」とこちらから尋ねる。
老人は「うん。ただ、鍵は」と言うので
「鍵は持ってるから大丈夫」と伝える。
「でも、電気は消し忘れたかも」
「ああ、わかった」
老人だからしょうがないな。諦めの気分。
店のような印象は会社のそれのようになる。
出入り口から入ると、他社の社員の姿。
階段を上ってすぐのオフィスに入る。
鍵は施錠されておらず、照明もついたまま。
しかも、見知らぬ若い人たちが四人ほどいて
会議だか会食中だか雑談をしている。
そ知らぬふりをして通り過ぎ、奥へ進む。
他社の人たちが勝手に使っているのだろうか。
納得しかねるが、そんなものかもしれない。
よくわからない慣習がまかり通っているようだ。

When I Return to Work
I'm about to cross the road at night.
Cars that are likely to come from the left and right,
however, do not come.
There is a store on the first floor of the building
on the other side of the crossing.
The old man in the store is about to go home.
"Oh, he's about to go home," I think.
The old man seems to get out of the car.
I ask, "Isn't there anyone anymore?"
The old man says, "Yeah, but I have the key,"
so I tell him, "I have the key, so it's okay."
"But I may have forgotten to turn off the lights."
"Oh, I understand."
He's an old man, so it can't be helped.
I feel like giving up.
The impression of a store is like that of a company.
When I entered through the doorway,
I saw an employee of another company.
I go up the stairs and enter the office.
The key is unlocked and the lights are on.
Moreover, there are about four strange young people
chatting at a meeting or during a dinner.
I pretend to be unfamiliar and pass by
and proceed to the back.
Are people from other companies using it
without permission?
I'm not convinced, but it may be that.
It seems that there are some unfamiliar customs.
