のっそり自分の部屋を出る。
下宿の共同流しで歯を磨こうとする。
そこへ、階段横の部屋から男が現れ
私に近寄り、ぼそぼそ呟く。
「魚の焼ける匂いがしてたまらない。
この換気扇はすぐ交換しなければいけない」
なぜかマンションの隣の号室の初老の男だ。
現在は転出して空き家になっているはず。
しかし、ここは昔のままの下宿。
さらに男は「雨漏れがひどい」と文句を言う。
男は昔の会社の先輩の顔になっている。
酒の席で得意先担当者の顔を殴り
営業から開発へ配置換えさせられた男だ。
共同物干し場へ移動して、下宿の板壁を指差す。
「ほれ、ここがここまで悪くなっている」
なるほど、板壁が腐食したように変色している。
そのうち、どこかのおばさんも現れ、口を出す。
「ここの大家の浴室もなんとかせにゃならん」
そのまま大家の浴室を土足で汚そうとするので
さすがに腹が立ってきた。
「そんなことは絶対にしてはいけない。
あの人はこの水がなければ生きていけないのだから」
銭湯のようにも見えるタイル敷きの浴槽に
さほど清潔とも思えぬ水が張ってある。
あの人はこの水を飲んでいるはず。
ここの女主人の正体は、実際の大家とは程遠く
人魚か蛇女みたいな「もののけ」に違いない。
なぜか、そんな思い込みが私にある。
