おれは新聞記者だ。
環境汚染やゴミ問題を扱いながら
新聞を売ることでゴミを増やしている。
うしろめたい気持ちでいっぱいだ。
今、おれは自動車整備工場の敷地にいて
ぼんやりタバコなんかふかしている。
白い煙が青空に消えるのを眺めている。
つまり、仕事でなくても空気を汚しているわけだ。
ちょっとやり切れない気分。
人声がして、立派な服を着た団体が現れた。
国内有数の自動車メーカーの方々である。
額の禿げあがった工場長に挨拶している。
こんな零細な自動車整備工場の工場長に
世界的に有名な社長が頭を下げている。
やはり何かありそうか気がする。
記事のネタになりそうな匂いがするのだ。
やがて話がついて、団体が立ち去る気配。
彼らにインタビューすべきか、おれは迷った。
その時、それが起こったのである。
整備工場の敷地から近所のビル工事現場が見える。
鉄骨を組んでいる最中のようだ。
新聞を売ったり、自動車を作ったり、ビルを築いたり
人間は色々なことをしているわけだ。
その工事中のビルの頂上から何かが落ちた。
昼頃だから、作業員の弁当箱だったかもしれない。
落下の途中、それが鉄骨か何かに当たり
かなりの音を立てて周囲に響き渡った。
新聞記者らしくない考えのような気もするが
落ちたのが人間でなくて本当に良かった。
続いて小さな建築資材らしきものが落ちた。
さらに、あまり大きくない資材がバラバラ落ちた。
それで終わりかと思ったら
しばらくして頂上の鉄骨が一本はずれて落ちた。
ものすごい音がした。
作業員たちの叫び声があがった。
あるいは誰かにぶつかったのかもしれない。
頂上付近に人が集まる様子が見える。
すると、かれらの体重のせいなのか
足場がはずれ、載っていた人もろとも落下した。
とんでもない事故だ。
あの高さからではまず助からない。
国内有数の自動車メーカーの社長は
この光景をしっかり見ているのだろうか。
そんな考えが頭の片隅に浮かんだものの
おれは工事現場の惨状から目を離すことができない。
作業員たちが集まり、その重みで鉄骨がはずれ
そのまま作業員もろとも落下する。
その単調なパターンの繰り返し。
おれの目の前で工事中のビルが崩れてゆく。
まるでオモチャというか、ほとんどマンガだ。
積み木の城みたいだ、とおれは思った。
それなのに、工事中で崩落中のビルの向こう側は
あいかわらず青空なのだった。

Newspaper Reporter and Blue Sky
I am a newspaper reporter.
While dealing with environmental pollution
and garbage issues,
I increase garbage by selling newspapers.
I'm full of guilty feelings.
Now, I'm on the premises of a car garage,
and I'm smoking a cigarette.
I watch the white smoke disappear into the blue sky.
In other words, I'm polluting the air
even when I'm not working.
A little I become unable to stand it.
People heard the voice of an organization
with fine clothes.
It is one of the leading automobile manufacturers
in Japan.
They greet the bald factory manager.
The world-famous president is bowing down
to the head of such a small car mechanic.
I still feel something is likely.
It smells like the source of the article.
Soon after the negotiations are over,
the group is about to leave.
I was at a loss whether to interview them.
That's when it happened.
The construction site of the neighborhood
can be seen from the site of the maintenance shop.
It looks like they are building a steel frame.
People sell newspapers, build cars, build buildings,
and do a lot of things.
Something fell from the top of the building
under construction.
It was around noon,
so it might have been a lunch box for workers.
On the way down, it hit a steel frame or something
and made a lot of noise and echoed around.
It seems like a newspaper reporter,
but it was really nice that people did not fall.
Then, what seemed to be small building materials fell.
In addition, not-so-large material fell down with noise.
When I thought it was over,
one steel frame on the top came off after a while.
There was a terrible sound.
The workers cried out.
Or maybe it hit someone.
I can see people gather near the top.
Then, perhaps due to their weight,
the scaffold came off and the people on it fell.
It is a terrible accident.
From that height, they are of little help.
Is the president of one of the leading automobile
manufacturers in Japan firmly watching this scene?
Though such thoughts came to my mind,
I could not keep my eyes
on the wreck of the construction site.
The workers gather,
the steel frame comes off due to the weight,
and it falls as it is.
Repetition of that monotonous pattern.
The building under construction collapses
in front of me.
It was almost a manga.
I thought it was like a castle for blocks.
Nevertheless, the other side of the collapsed building
was still a blue sky.
