高校の教室、廊下側の端の後ろから二番目の席。
授業中であったか休憩時間であったか思い出せない。
手のひらの上に小銭が少しばかりのっていた。
つまらないことを思いつき、その手を握り締め
すぐ後ろの席にいる同級生に突き出す。
握った手を一瞬開いて、すぐに閉じる。
「いくら？」
彼がそれらしい金額を言う。
「はずれ」
手のひらを開いて見せる。
硬貨を入れ替え、もう一度。
「またはずれ」
今度は、彼が自分の小銭を突き出した。
開いて閉じる。
チラリと見えたがよくわからない。
適当にそれらしい金額を言う。
すると偶然、当たってしまった。
三百円前後であったか
彼はその小銭を迷うことなく僕にくれた。
「えっ？ いいの？」
「当たったんだから、仕方ない」
大人だな、と思った。
実際、彼は年齢的に一年先輩であったが
精神的には十年ほど先輩な気がした。

High school classroom, the second seat

I can't remember whether
it was during class or during a break.
There were a few coins in the palm of my hand.
I came up with something boring,
clasped my hand, and stuck out to my classmate
in the seat behind me.
I open my hand for a moment
and close it immediately.
"How much?"
He says such an amount.
"Mistake."
I open my palm and show it.
I swapped coins and again.
"Mistake again."
This time he stuck out his coin.
Open and close.
It looked like a glance, but I'm not sure.
I say the appropriate amount.
Then I happened to hit it.
It was around 300 yen,
he gave me the change without hesitation.
"What? Is that okay?"
"You guessed it, so it can't be helped."
I thought he was an adult.
In fact, he was one year senior in age,
but mentally I felt he was ten years senior.
