集合住宅の裏庭の草刈りをしている。
時給500円未満の手当てを得て、毎朝少しずつ。
基本的に根ごと抜くことはない。
歩行の邪魔にならない程度に低く刈るだけ。
草のない地面は、雨で泥沼になってしまう。
もっとも、住民は見下ろすだけで歩きもしない。
野草、いわゆる雑草ばかりである。
芝生も生えるが、えこひいきはしない。
芝生のみでは、冬に枯野になってさみしい。
で、これら雑多な野草の名前は知らない。
図書館から図鑑を借りて調べる気もしない。
だが、区別できないのはつまらない。
そこで、勝手に命名することにした。
こいつは頭が松ぼっくりに似てるので
よし、「ぼっくり」と呼ぼう。
こっちのは芽の先が赤いから「赤目」だ。
そんな感じ。
すっかり隠居老人らしくなったものである。

This guy has a head that looks like a pine cone,
so let's call it "cone."
This one has "red eyes"
because the tips of the buds are red.
